The first quarter is in full swing! The students have our routines down pat and we are charging full steam ahead!
Kindergarten: We've worked hard to learn how to login to the network using the number pad on the keyboard and practice our mouse skills. Be sure to check out my mouse skills page for further practice! (Go to More at the top and click on Mouse Skills.) First Grade: They are pros at logging into the network! What amazing memories! We'll flex our creative juices, creating our own art online drawing inspiration from the books The Dot and Ish by Peter K. Reynolds. We're all excited to see where a line or mark will take us! As we finish the quarter, students will use research they gathered in the ILC with Mrs. Bates about extreme weather to produce a page with text and picture about their researched weather. Second Grade: It's hard to believe that this tech savvy crew were just first graders a few months back. They reviewed how to login and worked on their keyboarding skills. We just started our multi-week "Monster" project which involves grammar, drawing, creating a graphic organizer, and collaboration. We'll revisit our monsters in the later part of the year. To finish the quarter, we'll complete a webquest on Sequoyah to support learning in the classroom and create a class digital book about this famous Georgian utilizing PowerPoint! Third Grade: They had their formal introduction to typing and have now embarked on their three year journey in the typing program, Type to Learn 4. We also managed to fit in a little intro. to Word 2013. Students learned about text alignment, font changes, and saving. I am so proud of all they accomplished. For the rest of the quarter, we're going to be trailblazers as we delve into the new online features of BrainPop. Students will setup their own accounts, join their teacher's online class, and gain the ability to submit work. This will support future third grade 'flipped' lessons. Topics will include Rocks and Minerals and Fossils. They are excited about being able to work on projects at home and at school! Fourth Grade: Will your student ever get home? Our Stowaway project introduction was a big hit! We'll be learning more and more about Microsoft Excel utilizing real-time data, plotting latitude and longitude digitally in Google Earth, , and researching about our Ports of Call. Students will create itineraries and share about their destination through PowerPoint. Finally, we'll wrap up our project with a little math and a reflection created collaboratively in Office 365. Fifth Grade: Fifth graders are all set to utilize Office 365 this year. We'll begin our journey utilizing the web-based Microsoft app Sway to create a dynamic presentation about classroom learning. Topics will range from the Civil War, Reconstruction, Constructive and Destructive Forces, Levees, Pangaea, and the Ring of Fire. Phew! I am so excited to start another school year! The Tritt Computer Lab, or as I like to call it The Launching Pad, is a place where students "launch" their use of technology in the classroom, the ILC (Innovative Learning Commons), and beyond. We will tackle keyboarding in every grade as well as other basic skills to help enhance the curriculum at Tritt. I am thrilled that I will get to help your student become more tech-savvy!
Kindergarten -
We'll be data collectors in our last quarter of Kindergarten. Students will learn how to collect data and display it with the computer program, The Graph Club. Don't be surprised if our data collecting includes what is edible! Who doesn't love a graph where you get to eat the subject! First - After creating our own books in PowerPoint and producing a document to display what we learned about George Washington Carver, first graders will continue to sharpen their skills in Microsoft Office. Second - Second grade wrapped up their study of graphs and will be learning about goods and services. What better way to incorporate Word/Publisher or online creating tools, than to produce advertisements. We'll create some amazing marketing tools for a local, small restaurant in need of a digital presence! Third - Third grade has worked for most of the year learning the art of research. Where can you go to find trusted information? How do you know you can trust what you're reading? We'll continue this study learning about the threats to Georgia's Mountain and Piedmont regions. With their new-found understanding, they'll create a product to educate others. This can take the form of an info graphic, Word document, or PowerPoint. I can't wait to see what they come up with! Fourth - After sharing their AMAZING Revolutionary War PowerPoints, we tested one another's new knowledge with the web application KaHoot! It's a great way to get every child involved in their learning and a have a digital "camp fire" moment. Motivating! We'll move to crafting a marketing plan for the Annual Tritt Art Show. We'll be creating print and digital ads. Real world marketing in fourth grade! Fifth - We're still in the throes of cells! A hard concept to learn and an even harder concept to teach, but that is what our fifth graders were tasked with in their cell PowerPoint project. We'll wrap up the year with a take on NPR's Storycorps to capture those lasting memories of Tritt and ensuring our fifth graders feel confident in their technology use as they transition to Hightower Trail Middle School. Here's what we're working on currently:
Kindergarten - My Kindergarten friends continue to wow me with their use of KidPix 3D. We have mastered how to insert pictures and add text. Up next is a digital picture of our favorite season to support an ILC project. Wait until you see what Mrs. Dean and Mrs. Bates do with our computer lab contribution! First - In first grade, we have supported the study of fact and opinion in the classroom. My first grade friends learned how to insert online pictures, format text, and open and save in Microsoft Word. We will venture into Microsoft PowerPoint to create a slideshow about each students global address next. All the skills we learned in Word will come in handy! Second - We started 2016 with a bang! Second graders created dynamic digital slides in KidPix 3D with animation, motion paths, sound, and a carefully crafted sentence using their new knowledge of adverbs and other strong descriptive language. Classes will be able to use these digital creations in their Language Arts classes. Third - Third grade will continue their use of digital resources to research a topic and create a product. We'll be learning about Georgia's habitats and creating a more robust info-graphic. Fun! Fourth - Fourth grade will be tackling PowerPoint this quarter to create a slideshow about an important figure of the Revolutionary War. We'll go over the basics but also tackle the bells and whistles to create dynamic presentations. Fifth - We're wrapping up our collaborative PSA commercials. My fifth grade friends are dying to tackle their own PowerPoint, so we'll create independent projects next with the topic of cells to support the science curriculum.
It's hard to believe that we're only a few short weeks away from finishing the first half of the school year. I've received wonderful feedback from the teachers about how the students are navigating computers when not in the lab. Hooray! Here's what we're working on currently:
Kindergarten - My Kindergarten friends have loved KidPix 3D. Around Halloween they used drawing features as well as animation and sound to create a digital slide (See an example below.). We will continue to explore this program while meeting the standard of drawing an original picture. This is no small task since they are using a mouse! First - In first grade, student have been using The Graph Club to graph and analyze data. From The Very Hungry Caterpillar to our favorite Thanksgiving foods to their own survey, students are learning every aspect of the program AND how to look at data with different types of graphs. Second - Our monster project is finally finished! Phew! We have moved onto Kidspiration to map our knowledge of Mary Musgrove. Students used their background knowledge from the classroom and new learning through videos and websites to categorize information about her early life, historical impact, and life's work. Third - Third grade is learning about Soil! Fun, fun! It WILL be fun when they use their knowledge of PowerPoint to create an infographic of what they've learned about soil. I can't wait to share their work! Fourth - Our fourth grade students are all over the globe learning about the culture, sights, and sounds of their stowaway destination. I have loved seeing their enthusiasm for learning something completely new to them, and we've thrown in a few more Word lessons into the mix as well (text editing, bullet points, and working with pictures in Word). We will wrap up this project before the semester's end using mathematics to calculate the distance they have traveled and how long that distance took as well as how long it should take them to reach their port. Fifth - Using their health standard on cyber safety, fifth graders will work in groups to create a public service announcement educating other fourth and fifth graders learning and using PowerPoint and Animoto. October is my favorite and busiest time of the year. I celebrate two of my children's birthdays and my anniversary, too! Phew! The computer lab is no different! We are super busy wrapping up projects and beginning new ones. Here's a snippet of what we'll be working on in the next few weeks:
Kindergarten - Students have had an introduction to keyboarding via Maura the Key Seeker Monkey and will be moving into using the graphics program KidPix to create pictures that depict both night and day. First Grade - Students did a marvelous job with their class digital books! They'll be posted soon on blogs!. Our next project will involve the graphing program, The Graph Club. Students will collect and analyze data using this first grade friendly program. Second Grade - We are wrapping up and finalizing our Monster Projects and sending them to an elementary school in Texas. Our next focus has us mastering mind mapping software to organize information. More on our topic/s soon! Third Grade - Third graders are experts at Kidspiration, webbing software, and their typing/keyboarding skills are coming along. I've gotten several compliments from third grade teachers and Mrs. Bates. Way to go, Third Grade! Speaking of Mrs. Bates, she and I will be collaborating this quarter to help students learn Internet search basics. I'll be taking what we learn and using it with Word 2013, PowerPoint, and Publisher. Fourth Grade - Student are still out at sea! Will they ever get home? Our Stowaway project has been a big hit! We are learning more and more about Microsoft Word, latitude and longitude, utilizing real-time data, and researching about our Ports of Call. Students will be creating itineraries and sharing about their destination through Publisher. We'll wrap up our project with a reflection created in PowerPoint. Fifth Grade - We'll be tackling the Office Suite this quarter tying in the social studies curriculum to help support the classroom, and as always, students will work on keyboarding! Thanks for your support! We are already into week four! Time flies when you're busy and having fun! Students have absorbed so much in so little time. I'm super proud of all that our Tritt Tigers have learned! Here's a glimpse into what they've experienced in the computer lab..... First Grade - They are pros at logging into the network, worked on their mouse skills, and have started keyboarding with Keyseekers, a program whose goal is to familiarize students with which hand clicks on the keys. We'll soon be expanding our creative juices, creating our own art in KidPix drawing inspiration from the book The Dot by Peter K. Reynolds. We're all excited to see where a line or mark will take us! Second Grade - It's hard to believe that this tech savvy crew were just first graders a few months back. They learned how to login, have worked on their keyboarding skills, and took their first SRI test. We just started our multi-week "Monster" project which involves grammar, drawing, writing descriptive paragraphs and collaboration. They are all excited to design their very own monster and see if another child can recreate it! Third Grade - Third graders made swift work of SRI testing and logging into the network. They had their formal introduction to typing and have now embarked on their three year journey in the typing program, Type to Learn. We also managed to fit in a little intro. to Word 2013. Student learned about text alignment, font changes, and saving. I am so proud of all they accomplished. We will continue our work with Word 2013 and include some graphic organizing with Kidspiration/Inspiration. Fourth Grade and Fifth Grade - Students have already improved a great deal in their typing skills. We will work each class with Type to Learn, learning by touch with the use of a speedskin. Be on the look out for more information about how you can download Type to Learn at home. Students also received their first lessons in Microsoft Word 2013. They now know the basics of working with text, tables, and pictures. Ask them about double-clicking vs. triple-clicking. They love to share their own techy tips too! So proud of our students! |
